Handicap betting explained

A handicap bet gives one side a head-start (or deficit) before the final score is compared, so a stronger favourite can be backed at better odds than a straight Match Winner bet. A -1.5 handicap on a team means they need to win by 2 or more goals for the bet to win; a +1.5 handicap on the underdog means they win the bet even if they lose by exactly 1.

Why this matters for value betting

Pricing a handicap correctly requires modeling the full distribution of a match's margin of victory, not just who wins, a harder problem than a straight moneyline. Soft books relying on simpler models are more likely to misprice handicaps than Match Winner odds, especially in smaller leagues with less betting volume to correct them.
